The city of Benkelman is the county seat of Dundy County and is located at the junction of the north and south forks of the Republican River. Highways 34 and 61 provide easy access to the county’s excellent hunting and fishing areas. The nine-hole golf course nestled in the picturesque Republican River Valley is a perfect choice for a family golf outing with several holes to challenge the expert golfer. A handicap accessible swimming pool, which is heated, opened in 1997. The Ward Bond Memorial Park (named after a hometown boy and star of the TV series "Wagon Train") includes modern playground equipment, picnic shelters, and RV hookups. Benkelman has been named a Tree City USA for 12 consecutive years. The community-based Cultural Arts Center operates the Zorn Theater, where movies are shown Friday through Sunday in a nicely renovated facility.

Other recreational opportunities include two ball parks, a tennis court, and a skate park. The Dundy County Museum features a vast number of historical items displayed in 26 rooms, hallways, and machine shed. Highlights include a railroad room containing memorabilia from the Benkelman Depot, a doll room with more than 600 dolls, and an operating soda fountain. Benkelman is also blessed to have the Sarah Ann Hester Memorial Home which provides peace and security for the aged and ailing.

Benkelman is also fortunate to have a wide variety of  churches, two doctors as well as a physician assistant, two dentists, an optometrist, grocery store, convenience store, drug store, feed mill, library, motel, lumber yard, grain elevator, several restaurants, a "hangout" for the youth, Senior Center, and many more privately owned business.
